Volunteer Puppy Walkers take guide dog pups into their homes to care for them, socialize them and familiarize them with basic commands. You will have the puppy from the age of 7 weeks until approximately 14 months and will not be able to leave them alone for more than 3 hours, less when they are really young. You'll also need a private enclosed garden or yard and a hard area for the pup to do its business.
The role requires patience and commitment but it is hugely rewarding to know that you have nurtured a puppy that will go on to be a true life changer. You will have comprehensive training, the opportunity to attend a monthly puppy class and support from a volunteer mentor and your fellow puppy walkers.
The puppy walking community is very welcoming, friendly and sociable so as well as having the companionship of a beautiful dog you will also meet new people and get lots of fresh air and walks! Previous experience with dogs is not required but you will need to commitment to following Guide Dogs directions.
